| In the article on handicapping
football we referenced sandwich games as an additional method
of situational football handicapping. Just like revenge
games, the sandwich game angle is often overvalued by football
bettors, but it is still an important factor to consider when handicapping
College or Pro football. I am sure many of you have heard handicappers,
TV commentators, or radio hosts reference the Sandwich handicapping
angle so for those that don't know what they are talking about here
is the explanation.
A sandwich game is a situation where one team faces a modest opponent
the week after facing a strong opponent and has a strong opponent
awaiting after the modest team. The weaker team is sandwiched between
the two stronger opponents. A team in the sandwich situation will
have an inclination to think about next weeks game and recollect
over last weeks game instead of focusing total effort towards the
weaker opponent.
Because the team is overlooking the weaker opponent, the weaker
team often covers the point spread and sometimes pulls an outright
upset. It is hard enough covering a double digit point spread as
a favorite, and becomes especially hard when you are not completely
focused on the present opponent scheduled.
Take a look at some of the College football schedules this season
and circle all the possible sandwich situations for each team. Don’t
base your entire pick on the sandwich situation but by all means
do use this as part of the handicapping process.
