| In our football
handicapping article we referenced to revenge as one of the
many methods of situational handicapping. We do want to make it
clear that just because a team is in a revenge situation this does
not make them an automatic play. In fact in our opinion the revenge
game is one of the most overvalued reasons to bet a game. Just because
a team is in a revenge situation does not guarantee they will cover
the spread. Revenge games do not guarantee a team will pour it on
their opponent. The team with revenge might not be capable of pouring
it or may not be in the same class as the opponent. The revenge
team may not be playing well or could be overrated. These are all
things to consider when looking at the revenge angle.
Now the proper way to use revenge games in your handicapping is
to understand what it does. The biggest reason to play a team in
a revenge situation is because it guarantees that team will be focused.
One of the most important aspects of handicapping is knowing that
the team you bet on is going to give a good showing, and revenge
normally guarantees this. If a team is playing well, won a few games
in a row, and is in a revenge situation, this normally makes them
a worth a wager. If the team is playing poorly, but has revenge
as a motivating factor I would be very weary of placing a wager
on them. Remember revenge is just another angle, it simply doesn't
make an awful football team into a good team.
