One of the most anticipated weekly releases during
the football season is the NFL injury report. Since 1947, newspapers
have been publishing nfl injury reports to the public. During the
summer of 1947 than commissioner Bert Bell announced that the league
would be making public the names of all players who were unable
or unlikely to play in their teams next game. The reason this decision
was made, was to avoid any suggestion of impropriety. Coaches often
withheld injury information for strategic reasons, but it was in
the know that well-connected gamblers were able to get a hold of
this info and use it to their advantage.
Since 1947 the Football Injury Report hasn't gone through any considerable
changes, with the exception of the way injuries are classified.
The original categories were cannot play and may not play. These
days injured players are listed as probable, questionable, doubtful,
or out. Teams are instructed to use the follow guidelines.
Probable - 75% chance of playing.
Questionable - 50% chance of playing.
Doubtful - 25% chance of playing.
Out - 0% chance of playing.
