Hockey Betting

NHL Betting while it is not that popular to wager on betting on Hockey can be one of the most lucrative investments in the sports gambling industry today. To read more about why you should bet on the NFL please read our hockey gambling page. But this page is about Hockey betting and that is what we are going to explain to you. Unlike sports like football and basketball that use a point spread, hockey uses a moneyline and puck line for their NHL betting lines. Outlined below we will explain what those terms mean and how to bet on hockey using the money lines and puck lines.

Moneyline wagering is simply wagering on the game based on a given price set by the bookmaker instead of a point spread. Because there are so few goals in hockey, it is too hard to set a hockey point spread like you could in the basketball or football. An example of a typical NHL betting money line would be something like this.

Detroit Redwings -150 (Favorite)
Chicago Blackhawks +140 (Underdog)

The team with the minus in front of them is always the favorite; where as the team with the plus in front of them is the Underdog. So, if you wanted to bet on the Redwings you would have to put up $150 to win $100. If the Redwings won the game you would win $100 and receive $250 total. ($100 for the win plus the $150 you originally put up.)

Now if you wished to bet on the Blackhawks you would only have to lay $100 to win $140. If the Blackhawks won the game you would win $140 and receive $240 total. ($140 for the win plus the $100 you originally put up.)

The other way hockey betting is wagered on is the puck line. A puck line is similar to the spread in football and basketball but the spread will only be -0.5 goal or -1.5 goals. But like we mentioned earlier, because of the amount of low scoring games there is also a moneyline which accompanies the puck line. So for example, we have listed a typical NFL Puck line below.

Detroit Redwings -1.5 +160
Chicago Blackhawks +1.5 -170

So if you wagered on Detroit you would put up $100 to win $160. If the Redwings won by at least 2 goals or more you would win $160 and receive $260 total. ($160 for the winning wager plus the original $100 you put up to place the bet.) If the Blackhawks won the game out right or only lost by 1 goal you would lose the $100 you put up.

Conversely if you bet on Chicago you would have to put up $170 to win $100. If the Blackhawks won the game outright, tied, or only lost by 1 goal you would win $100 and receive $270 total. ($100 for the winning wager plus the original $170 you put up to place the wager.) If Detroit was to win the game by 2 or more goals you would lose the $170 you placed on Chicago.
