Handicapping the Bases

There is an old adage managers use that states, “baseball is a thinking mans game.” Just as this statement is true when it comes to baseball strategy, it is also true when it comes to handicapping baseball. When you are going over the baseball schedule there are a few areas we recommend you focus on if you expect to be a consistent winner over the long haul. We have used these handicapping methods for years and now this article will outline those steps for you, so you can have this same knowledge we possess.

First step in being a successful baseball handicapper is to understand how the baseball betting line works. This cannot be explained in a few sentences so if you don’t understand baseball lines we have a specific article called baseball betting that we recommend reading before you go any further.

After you understand how the betting lines work, the next step would be to keep accurate records. Keeping simple logs does not take much time to organize or keep up to date yet they can yield a wealth of information at a glance. While you are keeping track of all the pertinent stats from the box scores you can also think about the games and what has transpired. By keeping your own stats you may notice something that down the road may be an important factor in a particular handicapping situation. These simple logs enable you to track a teams recent performance, home and road play, how a team adjusts to change, etc. etc. Bottom line they may take a little work to compile but in the long run are well worth it.

Pitchers are the next factor to evaluate when handicapping baseball. When we say pitchers we don’t just mean the starters, but the entire pitching staff. The bullpen plays a vital role in winning or losing a game and you need to be on top of all the pitchers. Which ones are rested, healthy, pitching well, pitching poorly, etc. etc. With concerns to the starter you need to focus on how he is pitching his last few starts and traditionally how he was faired against the opponent. Recent performance in baseball is huge, as baseball is a sport of streaks.

Next step in winning baseball handicapping is looking at the overall teams. Remember there are 8 or 9 other starters involved in the outcome of the game as well as the reserves and the manager. Look to see how each team has hit against the opposing pitcher, how each team is hitting as a whole the last 10 games, is either team on winning or losing streak? etc. etc.

The final equation to factor into your baseball handicapping are the intangibles. These include but are not limited to weather, umpires, off the field news, fan support, atmosphere in the clubhouse, etc. etc. All these little things play a role into how a team is going to perform on a daily basis.

I know this is a lot to take in for you first timers and the fact of the matter is handicapping baseball is not easy. Remember if it was easy everyone would do it, but if you put in the time and effort a winning baseball handicapper can lead a healthy lifestyle. If you don’t feel you can put in the effort nor have the discipline to do so, our baseball handicapping picks page may peak your interests.
