| With the popularity of NCAA basketball and March
Madness, College Basketball Betting is and will always be a favorite
amongst the gambling community as betting on the game just makes
things more enjoyable for casual sports fan. Even people that know
nothing about the sport will throw down a few bucks to get into
an office pool with the chance of winning it. For those of you that
are in that class of having played in an office pool once or twice
before but have never bet on College basketball against the point
spread and are thinking about doing so this page is worth reading.
As with most lined sports there are 3 different ways you can place
a College basketball bet with your sportsbook or with your local
guy. Betting the total points scored by the 2 teams for the game,
betting on moneyline to see which team wins straight up, or betting
against the College basketball point spread which we will cover
in this article below. For this example we will need to have a fake
point spread like the one listed below.
Georgia Tech +11.5
Duke -11.5
If Georgia Tech was to be playing Duke during the College basketball
season the betting line may look something like that above. What
this means is Duke is favored by 11.5 points and you are essentially
down 11.5 points right off the bat of the game, where as Georgia
Tech is getting 11.5 points and is in effect ahead by 11.5 points
to start the game. The reason bookmakers do this is so they can
get equal action on both sides of the game. If they didn't
everyone would want to bet Duke since they know that the Blue devils
are a better team and the books would cease to exist as they would
get killed night in and night out by all the favorites.
So by giving other teams points this entices bettors to bet Georgia
Tech and by taking away points from Dukes score people tend to shy
away from betting Duke. In the end the books hope to have equal
action on both sides, pay the winners with the losers' money
and just collect the vig off of all the College basketball betting
action.
To figure out if your bet is a winner or not at the end of the
game is very easy task. All you have to do is take the final score
and add or subtract 11.5 points to whatever team you bet on. So
if you bet on Georgia Tech and they were to win the game outright
or lose by 11 points or less, your bet would be a winner. Where
as if you were to bet on Duke they would have to win the game by
12 points or more, your bet would be a loser.
