Betting Football

Now that you are equipped with the essentials of football handicapping, it is time to move onto the progression of betting football. Before we go any further we want to remind you that both handicapping and betting are both parts of the process but still remain separate, well-defined entities. A person can be an exceptional handicapper but still lose his shirt because he is a poor football bettor. There are a number of ways one can bet on football, the most common being a straight wager on the side or total. But one can also make a teaser bet, bet parlays, and sometimes go for a middle.

Most of you know how parlays work but for those that don't here is a quick crash course on parlays in connection to betting football. You make a bet on anywhere from 2-10 teams against the point spread. For your bet to be a winner you need all of your teams to cover the spread. Obviously the more teams you add to a parlay the harder it is to win, hence you receive better odds for the bigger the parlay. Even if just 1 of your teams doesn't cover the point spread the bet is considered a loss. Most sharp handicappers agree that anything over a 2 team parlay is a sucker bet, and we at diamondsportspicks.com concur as well.

Teasers are a form of betting football that are okay in our eyes if bet correctly and sparingly. Most of the time teasers bets are bad propositions but in the instances of when the point spread is +1.5 or +2 mathematically speaking it is better to make a 2 team 6 point teaser with another worthy opponent. With a 6 point teaser you are able to take that +1.5 and turn it into a +7.5 point spread. In this instance you are able to have position on the key numbers of 3, 4, 6, and 7. The down side of teasers is just like a parlay you must win both of your picks for the bet to be a winner.

A middle is an atypical situation where a player has the opportunity to win both sides of the bet if the game lands on a certain number. For example a sharp handicapper bets the Rams -6 over the Bears early in the week. Later in the week the line moves all the way up to Bears +7.5. One could than place another football bet on the Bears at +7.5. If the Rams where to win the game by exactly 7 points the player would win both bets as the Rams would cover the 6 so his original bet would be a winner as well as the Bears wouldn't have lost by more than 7 so his +7.5 bet would also be a winner. Instances like these don't happen that frequently but if you have a good idea of which way the lines are going to move, betting football early in the week can pay its dividends.

We hope this page has offered some insights to better help you understand the how to and dynamics of betting football. As you can see there is no single correct way or method to bet on football. Just remember there is a time and place for all of these different techniques of football betting.
